Here is the first of many monthly Grant Round-Ups. Please see below a summary of the healthcare and/or innovation-related funding opportunities currently available. For more information about each opportunity, please click on the Grant name.

Academia as lead applicants:

Knowledge transfer partnerships: 2022 to 2023, round one

Eligibility: The lead organisation must be a UK registered higher education or further education institution, RTO or catapult. They must collaborate with a UK-registered business or a not-for-profit organisation – the business must contribute to the project costs. The funding is for "a specific, strategic innovation project that tackles one or more challenges faced by the business partner."

Funding: a share of up £8 million

Submission Deadline: 6 April 2022

Better methods, better research

Eligibility: Research organisations: higher education institutions, UKRI-approved independent research organisations or NHS bodies, government-funded organisations, public sector research establishments, MRC institutes, MRC units and partnership institutes (including those in Gambia and Uganda), institutes and units funded by other research councils. Funding for improving the methods used by others in biomedical and health research.

Funding: up to £625,000

Opening date: 6 May 2022

Submission Deadline: 15 June 2022

Outcome: End of November / Early December 2022


Healthcare technologies for infectious disease resilience

Eligibility: Researcher-based in the UK at an organisation eligible for EPSRC funding. Funding for addressing infectious diseases, e.g. COVID-19, through healthcare technologies.

BHF - Translational Awards 

Eligibility: Principal investigator must be a researcher from an established UK research institution; commercial organisations can apply as collaborators. The scheme supports the development of novel, innovative technologies that can benefit human cardiovascular health. 

Funding: up to £750,000 (for up to 3 years) 

Submission Deadline: 14 March 2022 

Outcome: Approximately 6 months after submission. 


Heart Research UK - Translational Research Project (TRP) Grants

Eligibility: Principal investigator must be in a tenured position at the Host Institution. Funding can be used for either:  Preclinical studies - "studies should be applied in nature and directed at aetiology or treatments of diseases from the outset, not exploring fundamental mechanisms of biology or disease." OR Patient-focused studies – "research that has a direct and immediate benefit on patient care including diagnostic, prevention and treatment strategies."

Funding: up to £200,000

Submission Deadline: 1 June 2022

Outcome: November 2022


RNID-FPA Translational Grant

Eligibility: "Applicants may be from any country and may be from academic institutions and small/medium enterprises (SMEs)". Funding is for translating research discoveries into potential new treatments to protect and regenerate hearing and/or silence tinnitus.

Funding: up to £100,000 per year (up to 3 years)

Submission Deadline: 10 June 2022

Outcome: December 2022


Developing basic technologies in sensing and imaging

Eligibility: Eligible UK-based organisations – higher education institutions, IROs, public sector research establishments, UKRI funded labs and facilities. New collaborations and partnerships are encouraged, including disciplines and sectors. "This funding opportunity aims to accelerate the development of the next generation of tools and technologies that have the ability to make, measure and model the world around us."

Funding: £225,000

Submission Deadline: 3 March 2022

Outcome: April 2022 (Panel Meeting)


Healthcare as lead applicants:

Clinical academia research partnerships

Eligibility: For NHS staff or staff contracted to the NHS or working in the care or public health sectors. Must have at least one research partner (from higher education institutions, NHS bodies with research capacity and public sector research establishments). The projects can address research questions from disease-specific mechanistic hypotheses to MRC/NIHR research in priority areas.

Funding: Total fund = £5,000,000.

Submission Deadline: 17 November 2022

Outcome: End of June/Early July 2023


SMEs as lead applicants:

Innovate UK Smart Grants: January 2022 

Eligibility: UK registered organisations - with SME(s) as the lead or the collaborative grant claiming partner. Funding for "game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy".  

Funding: £100,000 - £500,000 (for 6 to 18 month projects); £100,000 - £2 million (for 19 to 36 month projects)

Submission Deadline: 13 April 2022

Outcome: 24 June 2022


Innovate UK's HealthTech Programme 

Eligibility:  SME working in HealthTech - funding is for use with regulatory affairs providers to navigate regulatory pathways.

Funding: up to £30,000

Submission Deadline: 31 May 2022
